Bird Hunters Against Bush

The Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation, a Washington lobbying organization representing outdoor gear and apparel manufacturers, estimates there are 47 million sportsmen and women in the United States who enjoy hunting, fishing, hiking, and other outdoor activities. Of those who voted in 2000, the foundation estimates that 68 percent supported President Bush.
Many bird hunters as well as bird watchers are no longer supportive of Bush's policies. Many hunters are strongly opposed to the administration’s policy of clearcutting in our country’s national forests. These trees are homes to millions of birds and other wildlife.
Conservation groups on the left and the right are united in their opposition to the plan to permit logging roads to be built in our national forests. Trout Unlimited, an organization of fishing enthusiasts, has 150,000 members, less than a third of whom are registered Democrats. Yet the organization is leading an effort to urge the administration to reconsider its policy.
Hunters too are widely opposed to the administration’s policies on wilderness areas. A petition signed by 470 gun clubs across the nation, including 40 in Bush’s home state of Texas, was sent to the Forest Service asking that the national forests be preserved so that their attractiveness to hunters would be maintained.
